Confessions of a Non Essential Shop 2020
Wishing all our wonderful friends and customers a Happy, Healthy and Harmonious New Year. It's hard to ignore the impact this unimaginable year has had on us all. We hope you and your loved ones have prevailed through the hardships and share our hope 2021 will become better and easier in due course.
Our year started like any other year with buying trips, trade fairs, planning and ordering for the year ahead. Little could we have predicted just how profound those early appointments would become in shaping our product collections for the year. Our hearts were filled with love and innocence as we enjoyed Valentine's Day as normal.
The first Lockdown struck in March and we jumped on the 'Rainbows of Hope' Theme as we all joined in unified defence of our cherished NHS. We had the pleasure of providing goody bags to NHS Trainees including toiletries donated by our favourite brand Fikkerts.
We were overwhelmed by your support and Ian walked miles and miles delivering your presents and purchases gift-wrapped with pride and pleasure.
With time to appreciate the locale, Ian created a new range of products celebrating our neighbourhood with designs created from photographs he took while visiting your doors.
We created a 'local wish list collaboration' with The Toy Project providing donations to children living in difficult situations, while they too were closed.
We created a safe space to enjoy our instore shopping experience when we were allowed to reopen through the Summer Months.
We decorated the shop for the Christmas Season in our usual magical style and completed the transformation just in time to be Locked Down again in November. Scarily one of our busiest months - again we felt the waves of your support - we even managed to almost sell out entirely of decorations online.
As Christmas approached we were dealt the crushing blow of closing our doors for a third time, with no notice at all our 5 big shopping days became click and collect only. So many of you saw Ian's interview on the BBC News describing this bitter disappointment.
We gave this year our best shot and we head into 2021 feeling somewhat humbled and harried but also extremely grateful to be part of an incredible community.
Leaving you with the most sincere and warmest wishes for a happy year ahead.
Ian & Kathryn
